Dissertation Intensive Kickoff - September

The Dissertation Writing Intensive is a 10-day virtual experience designed to support students who are currently working on dissertations in the PhD in Leadership and Change program.

The Dissertation Writing Intensive is available to any PhD candidate who wishes to allocate protected time over a dedicated period of (10) consecutive days toward working on any aspect or phase of his or her dissertation. Prior to signing up for the Dissertation Writing Intensive, students must consult with their Dissertation Chair regarding their participation. The Dissertation Chair will work with the student to establish concrete, realistic, and constructive goals for dissertation progress during the 10-day intensive.

The purpose of this Dissertation Writing Intensive is to facilitate the habitual focus, peer support, and accountability systems that help to sustain momentum during dissertation writing. The cornerstone of this experience is the peer support small group format; participants will meet regularly with a small group of peers who are also dedicated to making consistent progress on their dissertations over the 10-day period, with strategic one-hour check-ins scheduled over the course of the days.  Although peer-focused, Elaine Gale, Director of the Graduate School’s Writing Center will help facilitate the Intensive.

What to do if you think you’d like to participate in a Dissertation Intensive.

  1. Speak with your Dissertation Chair first to explore the timing and alignment with your own dissertation writing needs.
  2. Consider these 2 questions with your Chair to help you prepare:

    1. ~ Where you are in the dissertation-writing process (proposal, data collection/analysis, writing/editing, preparing for defense, post-defense).

    2. ~ Your goals for the intensive, as developed in consultation with their chairs, with the other participants in a virtual discussion board by the day before the Intensive begins.

  3. Submit your intent to participate to Elaine Gale (egale@antioch.edu) by going to the Calendar and “registering” @ least two weeks beforethe start of the Dissertation Writing Intensive.
  4. The registration form will ask for your answers to the 2 questions above.
  5. Join the Dissertation Intensive Google Group. You will find this group and Join request button on the Dissertation Intensive page of our program site.
  6. Kick-off session: 6:00-7:00pm PST/9:00-10:00pm ET on the Friday start of each Intensive.
  7. Mid-point check in session: A 5:00-6:00pm PST/8:00-9:00pm ET will be set mid-way through the 10-day Intensive for group accountability check-in with Elaine.
  8. Closing session: Sunday, 5:00-6:00pm PST/8:00-9:00pm ET

Format:

  • The virtual Dissertation Writing Intensive kicks off on a Friday evening at5:00-6:00pm PST/8:00-9:00pm ET. Participants will meet that evening to share their goals for the next 10 days.
  • Participants will choose writing partners, and schedule (3) check-in meetings with their writing partners over the course of the upcoming 10 days.
  • Participants will post their goals and progress reports to the Dissertation Intensive group (virtually) throughout the Intensive.
  • Participants will join a facilitated- group check-in with Elaine Gale mid-way through the Intensive.  The date will be set once the Intensive begins.
  • Participants will join a final check-out (with Elaine Gale) on the concluding Sundayat 5:00-6:00pm PST/8:00-9:00pm ET, as the end of the Dissertation Intensive.
  • During the Intensive, participants will be able to seek guidance from peers regarding their dissertation process.

Faculty involvement:

  • Elaine Gale, Director of the Graduate School’s Writing Center will be present during the kick-off, closing, and one mid-point check-in session. She will follow  the discussion thread to respond to process-related questions.
  • Each participant should discuss with his or her Dissertation Chair in advance about participating and also whether it might benefit them to check in with the Chair during the ten-day writing intensive.
  • Following the Intensive, participants should meet with their Chairs to discuss the writing process, goal progress, and emerging questions about the dissertation research. Substantive questions regarding dissertation research should be ultimately resolved in consultation with the Dissertation Chair.

Any consultations with Steve Shaw, Elaine Gale, or other faculty members to take place during the Intensive should be coordinated by the student and done in advance of the Dissertation
