Session I: Statistics, Why Should I Care?

Why Research? Leave your calculators and spreadsheets behind and join in for an engaging
conversation about the role statistics plays in research. Students should bring their questions
and come prepared to share their frustrations, fears, and curiosities about statistics.

Topics we will cover:

  • Why I hate/love/fear statistics
  • The role of stats in research, the types of questions we can answer
  • The language of quantitative research (such as M, averages, n, r, p-value, Cronbach
  • alpha, averages, variable types, statistically significant)

What you will take away:

  • A little more comfort and confidence reading and discussing quantitative research
  • The language of statistics (reading and understanding)
  • Answers to those questions you’ve always wanted to ask
